“We can’t solve problems by using the same kind of thinking we used when we created them.”
-Albert Einstein
Approach to Therapy
My goal in the therapeutic relationship is to instill hope through our connection. You do not have to be alone in what you are struggling with. There are proven ways that can help and you don’t have to continue feeling this way. I use evidence-based treatment modalities to help clients solve problems, build skills, and change patterns of thinking that are getting in the way. Ultimately my clients develop the tools necessary to manage independently and live a life they’re excited about. I am comfortable working with a wide range of clinical issues and varying levels of severity. The treatment approaches I use most often are cognitive-behavioral therapy and dialectical-behavior therapy.
What is Cognitive Behavior Therapy?
This treatment modality targets the intersection of thoughts, emotions and behaviors and the effect they have on our overall well-being. CBT has been shown to be effective in treating mood disorders like depression and bi-polar disorder, anxiety, eating disordered behavior and substance abuse. During session we will develop the tools to manage symptoms, work toward goals, and overcome barriers or conflicts that get in the way.
What is Dialectical Behavior Therapy?
Dialectical Behavior Therapy is based on the CBT approach but expands to include a group of skills in four core modules: mindfulness, emotion regulation, interpersonal effectiveness, and distress tolerance. The goal is to build the individual’s skills, while also supporting them in the changes they would like to make in their lives. Each person is different but I’ve found DBT’s mindfulness component to be especially helpful for clients within our modern society of instant gratification and constant comparison. These skills help us slow down, readjust our outlook, and make decisions that are going to be helpful over the long term. During session I teach the skills groups while integrating them into issues coming up for clients currently.
